Abstract
This course on sustainable development and ESG practices provides a conceptual and theoretical framework that is applied to a number of recent business cases based on real data. The lectures provide the conceptual and theoretical grounding and the smaller seminar groups are used to apply the concepts and theories in case studies.
Learning Objectives
- To develop a conceptual and theoretical framework for sustainable development and corporate ESG practices in the age of AI. The framework includes shareholder theory, stakeholder theory, CSR, the Triple Bottom Line, Value-Based Management, Value Rationality, AI and the Value Alignment Problem, Relative and Absolute Value, Corporate Core Values, Organisational Integrity, Perceived Leader Integrity, and Ethical Leadership. AI and ethical decision-making.
- To apply and test the conceptual and theoretical frameworks that support sustainable development and ESG practices in simulated cases based on real events and actual data from the local and international business environment including and use of Large Language Models and AI.
- To discuss and debate and critically analyse the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to sustainable development and ESG practices with a particular focus on the use of AI to support creative thinking and decision-making.
- To integrate ethical principles into corporate strategy that supports sustainable development and ESG practices through effective collaboration with AI.

- Explain the theoretical origins and evolution of these concepts in extant literature, tracing sustainable development from early ideas (e.g., 1987 Brundtland Report) to modern frameworks like ESG and UN SDGs
- Analyze interconnections among the concepts, such as how ESG operationalizes sustainable development at the corporate level and integrates TBL's environmental, social, and economic pillars with CSR and governance practices.
- Evaluate the role of emerging issues like AI value alignment in ethical leadership and business ethics within broader sustainable development and ESG frameworks
- Analyze how AI and Large Language Models impact organizational integrity and ethical decision-making processes, particularly as Artificial Moral Agents (AMAs), within these theoretical frameworks.
- Define key concepts in sustainable development and ESG practices, including their application to ethical business management in the AI era
- Identifies fundamental questions in sustainable business and ESG practices in the AI era and describes how case study methodology, assessment approaches, and ethical AI use support the development of informed positions on these issues.
