Abstract
The course “Transmedia Storytelling: Narrative Constructions, Emerging Technologies, and Global Audiences” examines the theoretical foundations and practical methodologies of designing transmedia narratives — multilayered stories disseminated across diverse platforms and formats, including cinema, television, digital platforms, games, social media, augmented and virtual reality, podcasts, and others. Particular emphasis is placed on the interplay between aesthetic construction and technological affordances: how emerging media and tools (such as interactive interfaces and recommendation algorithms) shape narrative structure, influence modes of audience engagement, and enable new strategies for extending story arcs. The practical component involves the development of concepts and prototypes for transmedia projects, ranging from briefs and storyboards to multimedia prototypes or media plans aimed at dissemination in global markets.
Learning Objectives
- Familiarize students with the theoretical foundations of transmedia storytelling and the core concepts of multimodal narrativity
- Examine how contemporary technologies influence narrative structure and modalities of audience engagement
- Develop skills in designing multiplatform storylines and aesthetic constructs adaptable to diverse formats and audiences
- Train students in practical methods for developing transmedia concepts, including briefing, storyboarding, script treatments, and prototyping
- Enable the creation of multimedia prototypes and pilot materials (videos, interactive demos, podcasts, AR/VR episodes) for project testing and presentation
- Cultivate competencies in devising media plans and strategies for promoting transmedia projects in local and global markets, accounting for platform- and audience-specific factors
- Build capacities for assessing the effectiveness and ethics of data and algorithm use in audience interaction design, including evaluation of user experience and engagement
