Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course centers on Korea's indigenous religions, with a primary emphasis on Korean shamanism. It will help to understand how religious traditions have shaped Korean history from prehistoric times through dynastic eras to modern expressions; trace their profound influence on cultural festivals, folklore, and social structures; and uncover their enduring imprint on traditional and contemporary Korean arts, including painting, music, dance, and literature. Through lectures, primary source analyses, and multimedia explorations, students will gain a nuanced understanding of shamanism's resilience amid Confucianism, Buddhism, and Christianity, revealing its role as a vital undercurrent in Korea's identity.
