Course Syllabus
Abstract
The discipline “French Indochina in the 19th – early 20th centuries” is a part of “Major” module for “South-East Studies” trajectory of the master’s program “Classical and Modern East: Languages, Cultures, Religions.” The course focuses on the colonial period in the history of Southeast Asia. Students will get acquainted with the political, economic, social, cultural processes that took place in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and adjacent regions during this period, and will gain an understanding of the impact these processes had on the historical fate of the countries in the region.
Learning Objectives
- The purpose of mastering the discipline "French Indochina in the 19th - early 20th centuries" is to develop in students an understanding of the key processes, events and political figures of the colonial policy of France in Indochina, the place of Indochina in the colonial policy of France in the 19th - 20th centuries; familiarizing students with the specifics of the colonial policy of France in Indochina in comparison with the colonial political and economic practices of other European countries: Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Germany; familiarizing students with the consequences of the colonial policy of France in Indochina: the impact on the culture, social structure, economy and political orientation of Cambodia, Laos, North and South Vietnam after 90 years of France's presence in Indochina.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- to be able to evaluate the periodization of France's policy in Indochina from the beginning of the First Indochina War (1858-1884) to the Second Indochina War (1946-1954); - the main events and successive directions of France's colonial policy in Indochina in the second half of the 19th - first half of the 20th centuries; - the main French political figures whose names are associated with fundamental economic, social and political reforms and counter-reforms in Indochina
- to have the skills of philosophical thinking to develop a systemic, holistic view of the problem of colonialism in general and French colonialism in Indochina in particular; - skills of public speaking, argumentation, and conducting a discussion to defend one's point of view on European (French) colonialism; - methods of literary and business written and oral speech in English to argue one's position on the role and significance of European (French) colonialism in the 19th – 20th centuries.
- to have the ability to identify the characteristic features of progressive and conservative colonial policy of France in Indochina; - determine progressive and conservative directions in the colonial policy of European states (using France as an example); - attribute the colonial activities of certain French politicians to the progressive and conservative direction; - navigate the contradictory tendencies of the colonial policy of France in Indochina at different stages of its evolution

- Topic 1. The first contacts of France with Indochina. France's intervention in the civil war in Vietnam in 1778-1802.
- Topic 2. The conquest of Indochina by France.
- Topic 3. The end of the Franco-Vietnamese War, the establishment of the French protectorate, the Franco-Chinese War and China's renunciation of suzerainty over Vietnam
- Topic 4. French rule in Indochina from the formation of the Indochinese Union to the reign of Paul Doumer.
- Topic 5. French Indochina from the reign of Paul Doumrer (1897-1902) to the first reign of Albert Saro (1911-1914) and the beginning of the First World War.
- Topic 6. French Indochina during the First World War: from the first (1911-1914) to the second (1917-1919) reign of Albert Sarraut.
- Topic 7. French Indochina from the end of the First World War to the beginning of the Great Depression.
- Topic 8. French Indochina: from the Great Depression to the beginning of World War II (1929-1939).
- Topic 9. French Indochina during World War II (1939-1945).
- Topic 10. The Franco-Vietnamese War 1946-1954. Defeat at Dien Bien Phu and France’s recognition of the independence of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
