Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is intended as an introduction to formal theoretical linguistics for computational linguists. It covers core ideas in contemporary theoretical phonology, syntax, morphology and semantics/pragmatics following the generative tradition, often in comparison to alternative formal frameworks.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • This class gives the students an opportunity to get accustomed to formal theorizing in linguistics. The main practical goal is to master the main tools of formal linguistic analysis in the fields of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics.
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • analyze data using the tools of Generative Phonology
  • analyze data using the tools of Optimality Theory
  • analyze sentence structure using the generative grammar formalism
  • analyze sentence structure using the HPSG formalism
  • build syntactic representations using dependencies and constituents
  • use the basic conceptual apparatus of Distributed Morphology and Paradigm Function Morphology
  • compute truth conditions of sentences
  • distinguish between truth-conditional meaning and (enriched) pragmatic meaning
  • put forward and test hypotheses about the modeling of various linguistic phenomena in different modules of the Y-model
