Аннотация

The course is devoted to the basics of typological research. Typological similarities between languages in opposition to areal and genetic proximity, rules and principles of language sampling, possible parameters of typological variation, principles and methods of semantic mapping are discussed. Examples of typological studies of different phenomena are considered.

  • The course introduces students to the basics of linguistic typology, as well as to the linguistic diversity of the world in relation to various linguistic phenomena, systematizes knowledge of the tasks and methods of linguistic typology, and develops the skill of independently navigating typological literature. The course covers several theoretical and practical topics regarding different levels of language such as morphosyntax, grammatical semantics and phonology.

  • Students have general understanding of linguistic typology as a field, its main goals and problems, its relation to comparative linguistics, areal linguistics and studies of language contact.
  • Students are acquainted with main terms and problems in phonetic and phonology and the diversity of phonological systems in languages of the world.
  • Students are acquainted with main terms and problems of morphology and are able to navigate typological literature on topics such as wordhood, affixes, clitics, paradigms.
  • Students are acquainted with main terms and problems in semantics and are able to navigate typological literature on main topics such as the opposition of lexical and grammatical meanings, types of lexical semantic shift and grammatical diachronic change
  • Students are acquainted with the diversity of nominal grammatical categories such as case, gender, number and definiteness.
  • Students are acquainted with the diversity of verbal grammatical categories such as tense, aspect and modality.
  • Students are acquainted with main morphosyntactic phenomena and their diversity across languages of the world and are able to navigate general typological literature on such topics as phrase structure, agreement, alignment and word order.
  • Students are acquainted with main methodological issues in linguistic typology such as language sampling and specific methods of typological studies such as semantic maps and hierarchies.
