Аннотация

The course introduces the basic concepts of sociolinguistics, such as dialect, idiolect, lingua franca, linguistic (self)identity, level of prestige of an idiom, etc., types of sociolinguistic situations and methods of their research, the basics of variational sociolinguistics.

Цель освоения дисциплины

Define and critically employ core sociolinguistic concepts (e.g., dialect, idiolect, sociolect, register, lingua franca, linguistic prestige, identity) to analyze the relationship between language variation and social structure.
Identify and characterize diverse sociolinguistic situations (e.g., multilingualism, diglossia, language contact, standardization) and understand the social, historical, and political factors that shape them.
Apply foundational principles of variationist sociolinguistics to recognize, describe, and interpret patterns of linguistic variation correlated with social factors like class, gender, age, or ethnicity.
To learn about the key methodological approaches used in sociolinguistic research to collect and analyse data on language use in its social context and to understand their strengths and limitations.

Comprehension of core sociolinguistic concepts.
Familiarity with the historical development of the field.
Produce sociolinguistic case study analyses of specific minority language contexts, accurately applying concepts (prestige, identity, shift) to explain observed language behaviors and attitudes.
Analyze sociolinguistics processes from both linguistic and sociological points of view documenting patterns of linguistic variation.
Critically evaluate the effectiveness of real-world language policies or revitalization initiatives targeting specific minority languages, using sociolinguistic frameworks and evidence.
Design and conduct basic sociolinguistic fieldwork aimed at gathering data on minority language use or perception within a community.
