Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course introduces fundamental notions of the study of language contact from the perspective of language change and areal typology. It covers contact-induced change at all levels (phonology, morphology, syntax and the lexicon), thoroughly discusses both matter and pattern borrowing, and provides an overview of the social conditions and correlates of language contact, such as traditional patterns of bilingualism.
Learning Objectives
- To introduce the students to the fundamental notions of language contact
- To discuss phenomena of language contact at all linguistic levels (phonology, morphology, syntax and the lexicon), matter and pattern borrowing with concrete examples
Expected Learning Outcomes
- are familiar with the fundamental notions of language contact
- are able to identify and analyze phenomena of contact-induced language change at different linguistic levels
- are able to apply the methodological knowledge acquired to investigate phenomena of language contact in various contact settings
