Course Syllabus

Abstract

The Management in Asian Countries course provides a comprehensive overview of the culture and business practices in East and South East Asia, including India and the United Arab Emirates. Such an overview provides students with a solid and fundamental basis for understanding the key factors that influence the formulation and implementation of business strategy in these countries. Students will learn about the particularities of doing business in Asian markets, and the challenges of setting up and managing a business in Asia. Students will complete the course with a better understanding of how to identify and evaluate the risks and opportunities associated with Asian markets. In addition, the course focuses on some of the key business practices, industries and prominent companies in the region. By critically examining the unique macro factors, business and management practices specific to these industries, companies and countries, students will gain an in-depth understanding of management in Asia with a broad regional and global perspective.

    The essay is an individual research paper that enables students to explore a specific managerial, organizational or cultural aspect of management in Asian countries in depth. The assignment aims to developing students’ analytical thinking, research skills, and academic writing within an Asian business and institutional context. The essay should demonstrate how cultural, historical, institutional, and social factors shape management systems, leadership styles, decision-making processes, and human resource practices in Asian countries. Requirements Each student must prepare an independent and original research paper. Students are required to consult with the instructor in advance to select and approve their essay topic. The topic must be directly related to management practices in one or more Asian countries and aligned with the learning objectives of the course Management in Asian Countries. Length and Format Length: 14-15 pages (excluding title page, references, and appendices) Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt Line spacing: 1.5 Margins: 2.5 cm on all sides File format: YOUR_LAST_NAME.docx or YOUR_LAST_NAME.pdf Structure of the Paper 1. Title Page Include: • Essay title • Student’s full name • Group number • Course title • Instructor’s name • Submission date 2. Introduction • Clearly formulate the research question or management problem related to management in an Asian country or region • Explain the relevance of the topic to Asian management practices and to the course objectives • Define the research objectives, analytical approach, and scope of the paper 3. Theoretical Framework 1 Review relevant management and cross-cultural theories used in the course, such as: Cultural frameworks (Hall, Hofstede, Trompenaars, Lewis etc) Leadership and decision-making models Institutional and organizational perspectives 2 Explain how these theories inform your analysis of Asian management practices 3 Use academic sources (books, peer-reviewed articles, official reports) 4. Main Analysis Apply selected theories to: • a specific Asian country or countries, and/or • real companies, industries, or managerial practices in Asia Analyze issues such as: • leadership styles and hierarchy • decision-making processes • communication and negotiation • human resource management • relationship-based business practices Support arguments with empirical data, company cases, official statistics, and academic literature 5. Discussion Critically interpret your findings Identify: • cultural or institutional contradictions • managerial limitations or risks • implications for foreign and local managers operating in Asia Discuss how Asian management models differ from or challenge Western assumptions 6. Conclusion • Summarize the key analytical insights • Formulate managerial implications relevant to Asian business environments • Suggest possible directions for future research or managerial practice 7. References • List all cited sources using GOST citation standards • Include DOI numbers or stable URLs where applicable 8. Appendices (if applicable) Tables, figures, company data, interview excerpts, or supplementary materials Academic Integrity and AI Use All ideas, data, and direct quotations drawn from external sources must be appropriately cited within the text and fully listed in the reference section. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly) were used or not used, this must be clearly stated in a brief declaration at the end of the paper. The declaration should specify the name of the AI tool and the purpose of its use (e.g., language editing, idea generation, literature search support), or explicitly confirm that no AI tools were used.

    The final examination is conducted in written form and consists of two sections designed to assess both factual knowledge and analytical competencies in the field of management in Asian countries. Section 1. Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) • 10 multiple-choice questions • Each question has four answer options, with one correct answer • Questions cover all countries studied in the course • Focus on applied understanding rather than memorization Sample MCQ Which concept best explains the use of indirect communication and pre-decision alignment in Japanese management practices? A. Tatemae B. Nemawashi C. Kaizen D. Uchi–soto Section 2. Open-Ended Analytical Questions • 4 open-ended questions • Students answer all questions • Answers require structured arguments, country-specific examples and theory-based reasoning Sample Question: Compare the role of hierarchy in two Asian management systems. How do cultural traditions influence leadership behavior and decision-making processes?

    Active and informed participation in class discussions, including contributions to case analyses, engagement in comparative discussions of management practices across Asian countries and demonstration of preparedness through the use of relevant concepts, terminology and examples from the course materials. Participation is assessed based on the quality and consistency of students’ engagement in class activities and discussions throughout the course.
  • non-blocking Mini-tests
    Mini-tests are short in-class or online assessments consisting of ten multiple-choice questions. Each question provides four answer options, with only one correct answer. Mini-tests are designed to assess students’ understanding and application of key concepts, terminology, and country-specific management practices covered in the course lectures and readings.
  • non-blocking Attendance
    Attendance is taken into account as part of the course assessment. Students are expected to attend classes on time and for the full duration of each session. Arriving more than 15 minutes late is considered equivalent to absence, and attendance for that class will not be recorded.
