Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course is designed for Bachelor's students mastering English within a Management curriculum. The course is designed to help the students communicate effectively in the workspace using the language of business, building effective business communications. The course offers practical training in functional business skills such as collaboration, challenging conversations, presentations, analysing risk and maintaining relationships, which allows for personalization of the learning experience with a structured modular approach that gives the flexibility to focus on specific needs and learning outcomes.The course is based on authentic materials from The Financial Times and The New York Times and encourages students to engage in a variety of topics, from career to social media, sustainability, impact investment, globalization, and many others. Besides reading and watching authentic content that has not been adapted for non-native speakers, the students get engaged in research, pair- and group-work to investigate the world of business and practice communication skills that are vital for entrepreneurs and managers.
Learning Objectives
- The main objective of the course is for the students to acquire a set of business English competencies and skills that will allow them to communicate effectively in professional and academic contexts. On completing the course, the students will be able to:
- understand the details in linguistically complex talks on a range of business, political, environmental, and social issues; infer implicit meaning, opinion, and attitude between fluent speakers with a variety of accents.
- express himself or herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions and use language flexibly and effectively for academic and professional purposes, such as negotiations, presentations, meetings, discussions, conversations, or debates.
- produce clear, well-structured, argumentative, detailed texts on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors, cohesive devices, grammar, and vocabulary range.
- understand the details of lengthy, demanding texts; extract arguments, facts, ideas, and opinions from highly specialized written sources within the management field, such as work-related documents, textbooks, instructions, or articles.
- apply basic business skills in academic and professional contexts and sustain written and oral formal corporate communication in English.
Expected Learning Outcomes

- To develop skills in writing clear, well-structured texts on a variety of subjects expanding points of view, developing arguments, synthesising and evaluating information, can evaluate different ideas or solutions to a problem (summary, essay, report, review)
- To develop skills of participating in dialogues and briefings on professional topics (active listening, questioning, responding to questions, emphasizing, discussion strategies)
- To develop skills of using listening techniques (predicting, understanding main ideas and details in professional context)
- To improve skills in taking part in debates (debate on abstract, complex topics)
- to take part in discussions and give logically structured talks on various professionally oriented issues, providing reasons for their opinions, and expressing themselves fluently and spontaneously without obvious searching for expressions B2+
- To use basic reading techniques, skimming & scanning to make inferences or predictions about the content of texts/ newspaper and magazine articles
- To evaluate and synthesise information and arguments from a number of sources; practicing note-taking as writing a list of key points after listening to a professional talk or discussion (ex.:TED talks); to understand main points and check comprehension by using contextual clues.
- To be able to adopt various reading strategies (skimming, scanning, identifying gist and differentiating details, inferring meaning from context, comprehending writer’s attitude)
- Can give a linguistically complex detailed business presentation in groups using well-organised slides and a range of cohesive devices
- Can understand the details in linguistically complex fast-paced conversations between fluent speakers with a variety of accents
- Can describe visual information (graphs, pie charts, tables, maps) and draw conclusions and recommendations from this data
- Can sustain a polylogue and use language flexibly and effectively for discussions, conversations or debates
- Can extract arguments, facts, ideas and opinions in highly specialized written sources within the management field by using appropriate reading strategies and techniques
- Can systematically develop a well-structured argument on complex subjects giving the reasons for or against a point of view and relevant supporting detail while showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices
- Can sustain written corporate communication while maintaining an appropriate tone and clear organization
- Can write a linguistically-complex structured argumentative essay using the appropriate register and cohesive devices
- Can write a resume/CV with all relevant information about educational and work history
- Can deliver well-organised informative and descriptive lengthy monologues on a variety of academic and professional topics
- Can use complex grammar structures flexibly and effectively to convey ideas in professional contexts
- Can write clear and organised work-related materials and notes
- Can modify the language, register and organisation of information based on the receiver and context
- Can efficiently participate in extended, detailed professional meetings and negotiations while using appropriate strategies and language
- Can follow a wide range of factual, professional and creative text with complex and abstract ideas
- Can accurately use a range of specialized vocabulary items in professional contexts
- Can write a linguistically complex, logically structured and detailed report
- Can use language effectively and flexibly in semi-formal social professional settings

Assessment Elements
- Summer Final AssessmentSummer Final Assessment is held at the end of the 4 module. Time limit: 70 minutes offline. The structure of the exam: 1. Reading (R): Students read a text and complete the tasks. Max. 10 points. 2. Writing (W) A student should write a self-assessment report. Grading formula: R*0,4 + W*0,6 = 10.
- Winter Final AssessmentWinter Final Assessment is held at the end of the 2 module. Time limit: 70 minutes offline. The structure of the exam: 1. Listening (L): Listen to the text ONCE and complete the tasks. Max. 10 points. Students have no more than 20 minutes to complete the Listening (L) part. 2. Writing (W) A student should write a report. Grading formula: L*0,4 + W*0,6 = 10.
- Home AssignmentHome assignment includes activities that students do at home on paper, orally or in Smart LMS. Home Assignment tasks CAN be retaken during 7 calendar days since the official deadline specified for tasks submission. The grade for each retaken task is calculated using the coefficient 0.8: HA*0.8.
- Classroom Written AssessmentWritten assessment includes listening and reading tests, writing tasks and written business English competences, such as a report, an e-mail and a CV.
- Classroom Oral AssessmentOral assessment includes Speaking tests and oral business English competences, such as negotiations, meetings, business presentations, pitching, discussions and debates.
