Full Syllabus Ask Question

Abstract

This course will provide attendants with understanding of the following matters: (a) what is law, how it is different from custom, ethics, social norms; why it is important for you and your future, (b) why law emerged as part of people’s everyday life, business practice and international relations, (c) its role, objectives and functions through time, (d) how law is related to legal system and legislation, (e) how law differs in various jurisdictions, how it is enforced and what are the triggers for liability mechanisms. As a result a student will be able to appreciate sophisticated nature of legal matters, see how law penetrates everyday life of every social agent, private and public alike, grasp the reasons why such system exists and look at it from the comparative global perspective.

Learning Objectives

The main objective of this course is to provide students with general understanding of legal matters and necessary tools to navigate within the Law field.

Understands the character of law as a normative system
Understands the differences between main legal systems of the world
Understands the main traits of nation-state
Knows the main aspects of functioning and forms of state in contemporary world

Understands the concepts of right and liberties, knows the differences between the generations of rights
Has a grasp of main concepts of property, contract and family law
Has a grasp of main concepts of criminal law and criminal procedure
Shows knowledge of main theoretical issues of legal control over economy

Seminar activity
Exam
The exam is conducted orally using tickets. Questions that have not not been addressed in the framework of lectures, seminars, home study readings are not included in the final list of exam questions. The student cannot use any materials or devices during preparation and answer. The exam is conducted offline. Time is provided for preparation (20-30 minutes). Rating system: 10-point.
Colloquium
Students are divided into groups. To each group a topic is given and a time for preparation. Then a teacher asks the members of the group questions within the topic subject matter. Depending on the answers of all the members of the group the group gets its grade which all the members also get individually. Thus, the group is encouraged to help all its members to prepare for the answer.
