Course Syllabus

Abstract

The Chinese language course provides basic speaking, listening and writing skills, as well as a general understanding of the structure of the language. By the end of the first year, students are able to maintain conversations on general topics, understand adapted dialogues in the target language, and translate into and from Chinese texts of at least HSK 1 level. At the end of the second year of study, students have more advanced speaking, listening and writing skills, as well as a developed understanding of the structure of the language. Furthermore, students are able to maintain simple dialogue (on the topics: family, school, work and flat rent) and translate into and from Chinese texts of at least HSK 2 level. During the third year, the course provides advanced speaking, listening and writing skills and a more detailed understanding of the structure, morphology, syntax and phonetics of the language. By the end of the third year, students are able to maintain a sustained dialogue (on the topics: shopping, Chinese cuisine, going to a restaurant) and translate into and from Chinese texts of at least HSK 3 level. In the fourth year, students improve and consolidate their speaking, listening and writing skills. At the end of the final year, students are able to maintain a sustained dialogue (on the topics: medication, travelling and tourism) watch adapted and non-adapted films in Chinese, and translate into and from Chinese texts at a level of at least HSK 4.

  • comprehensive formation and development of speech competence aimed at developing and improving communicative skills in five types of speech activity (speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation); the ability to plan one's speech behaviour adequately to various communicative situations.
  • formation and development of linguistic competence aimed at systematisation of the studied material; mastering of linguistic means (phonetic, orthographic, lexical, grammatical) on the basis of authentic material; mastering of linguistic peculiarities of the Chinese language; development of skills of operating linguistic units for communicative purposes.
  • development of sociocultural competence, aimed at increasing the amount of knowledge and improving the skills necessary for using the language in situations of communication with representatives of another culture, the ability to find ways out of situations of communicative failure due to sociocultural interferences in communication.
  • training of a specialist who speaks Chinese to the extent that allows to use it in the future to solve professional tasks of information-linguistic, consultative-communicative and translation activities at the level corresponding to level 4 of the standardised qualification examination in Chinese language (HSK 4).

  • - can pronounce any combination of initials, finals, tones in pinyin, as well as comply with the regulatory rules of phonetic sound

  • - students learn the vocabulary about family, school, work and complete oral translations from Chinese to Russian and from Russian to Chinese.
  • - students learn the vocabulary about life problems and flat rent and complete oral translations from Chinese to Russian and from Russian to Chinese
  • - active vocabulary and grammar of “HSK3” textbook.
  • - students learn the vocabulary about shopping and clothes and complete oral translations from Chinese to Russian and from Russian to Chinese
  • - students learn the vocabulary about going to a restaurant, making order and names of different Chinese dishes
  • - active vocabulary and grammar of “HSK4” textbook.
  • - students learn the vocabulary about buying medication, different diseases and become familiarised with the ways of asking for directions and giving them.
  • - students learn the vocabulary about travelling, planning a trip, and sightseeing in China

  • Consulting a doctor. Traditional chinese medicine In this topic, students will learn basic vocabulary related to visit the doctor; some vocabulary for the human body; how to ask about and describe one’s health; learn the common procedures of visiting a doctor in Chinese hospitals; answer a variety of questions from patients as a guiding nurse.
  • Chinese New Year: Customs & Traditions In this lesson, students discuss how they celebrate New Year, and read about some typical celebrations in China, as well as looking at New Year’s resolutions and reflecting on what makes a year good or bad
  • Planning vacation In this topic, students will learn how to describe and respond to questions about their travel plans, including where, why, how, when, with whom, how long and how much it will cost. Students ask these questions to find out about the travel plans of their Chinese 'study buddy' and compare them with their own.
  • Chinese lucky numbers In this topic, students will learn what numbers in China traditionally associated with fortune. Students will learn how to express big numbers.
  • Going to the bookshop In this topic, students will learn words and expressions related to the bookshop and the library; learn how to express capability and possibility.
  • Visiting Peking opera In this lesson, explore the history and characteristics of Peking Opera, and learn about roles found within it.
  • Visiting an Exhibition In this topic, students will learn basic vocabulary related to visit the exhibition.
  • Go to the police when you are in trouble In this lesson, students learn how to describe a variety of household problems, including leaking pipes, carpet stains, power cuts, blocked toilets, mislaid keys, etc
  • Ordering food in restaurant In this topic, students will learn how to order food in restaurant. They will learn some basic vocabulary and phrases used in ordering food at restaurants. Students will learn something about foods and restaurants from different cultures. Students will also get a chance to have fun making their own menus and practice ordering.

  • Beijing and Shanghai This lesson gives students the opportunity to find out more about Beijing and Shanghai. Students will have the chance to read about this two cities and find out a little about the differences of Beijing and Shanghai.
  • Attending a Chinese wedding In this topic, students will learn words and expressions related to wedding and wedding traditions in China, learn how to talk about gifts and presents. Students practise making small talk at a wedding and share secrets and do some gossiping. Language point: expressions to use for telling a secret or registering surprise, family vocabulary; rhythm and stress when giving important information.
