Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course equips doctoral students with advanced skills for effectively searching, analyzing, synthesizing, and managing scholarly literature. Students will learn state-of-the-art techniques for literature discovery, various types of literature reviews, critical appraisal, and reference management. The course culminates in students producing a literature review section for their dissertation or a review article.

Assessment Elements
- Weekly hands-on assignment 1Conduct an advanced search on your research topic using at least three different databases, applying Boolean operators and filters. Submit a report comparing the results and effectiveness of each search strategy.
- Weekly-hand on assignment 2Develop a PRISMA flow diagram for a mini systematic review on a specific aspect of your research topic. Include your search strategy and selection criteria.
- Weekly-hand on assignment 3Perform a basic bibliometric analysis of the top 20 most cited papers in your field using VOSviewer. Submit a visualization of the results and a brief interpretation.
- Weekly-hand on assignment 4Critically appraise two research papers relevant to your topic using the CASP checklist. Write a 500-word synthesis comparing their strengths and weaknesses.
- Weekly-hand on assignment 5Set up a Zotero library for your research project. Organize at least 50 sources into collections, add tags, and create a literature matrix. Submit screenshots of your organized library.
- Final Literature Review ProjectLength: 4000-5000 words (excluding references) Include at least 30 high-quality, peer-reviewed sources Clearly state the review's purpose and research question(s) Use appropriate review methodology (e.g., systematic, scoping, narrative) Include a PRISMA flow diagram or equivalent for source selection Synthesize findings into coherent themes or arguments Identify gaps in the literature and suggest future research directions Include at least one visual representation of the literature (e.g., concept map, bibliometric analysis visualization) Follow proper citation style (APA, MLA, or as appropriate for your field)
