Course Syllabus
Abstract
Learning a foreign language is a complex phenomenon that involves a variety of external and internal factors such as educational context, learners’ needs, wants and lacks along with cognitive neural linguistic processes. This course focuses on psychological features specific for adults of different backgrounds who learn foreign languages for different purposes. Teaching implications of those features are addressed.
Learning Objectives
- learn about existing learning and psychological theories
- identify major differences between teaching adults and children
- understand how to teach groups and individual classes
- deal with multiple ways of understanding the self
- define motivation and discuss existing theories of motivation
Expected Learning Outcomes
- students will learn about existing psychological theories applied in education (positive psychology, humanism, behaviorism, etc)
- students will be aware of the specifics of adult psychology
- students will learn about group dynamics and the ways to manage it
- learn about the ways to maintain effective group dynamics
- learners will distinguish between self-efficacy, self-concept, self-esteem and identity
- learners will be able to provide constructive feedback
- learn about emotional intelligence and ways to affect it
- gain information about anxiety and its symptoms
- understand the nature of emotions
- learn how to use affect in language learning
- learn how to manage positive emotions
- define the concept of motivation
- discuss cognitive theories of motivation
- distinguish between achievement and competence
- learn about self-determination theory
- learn to set SMART goals
