Abstract
Overview of principle pathological paradigms of common neurodegenerative disorders (NDD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (AMS), Frontotemporal lobar degeneration, (FTLD), multiple sclerosis (MS), Multiple system atrophy(MSA), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Prkinson’s disease (PD), Prions and Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD), and others. Evaluation of existing and emerging therapeutic strategies, including small molecule, biologicals, monoclonal antibodies, siRNA, ASO, precision genome modifications. Discussion of current research articles and clinical trials on the subject in the form of seminars by the class led by the instructor.
Topics include:
Genetic mutations leading to NDD; monogenic and polygenic disorders; manifestation of mutations into intermediate phenotypes. Participation of neuron and glial in NDG. Chronic inflammatory processes in NDD. Special focus will be made on transgenic models of NDD in mice and primates and for the application of in vivo methods, Adeno-associated viruses (AAV), the designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs(DREADD), optogenetics, to better understand the causes and design improved treatments with specific focus placed on AD, PD, ALS
Learning Objectives
- The main purpose of the course is to familiarize students with the current stage of studying the molecular and cellular foundations of neurodegenerative diseases and modern therapeutic technologies
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of modern methods of diagnosis and study of diseases of the nervous system.
- Be able to analyze and interpret the role of genetic mutations, immune mechanisms, and biomarkers in the context of the pathophysiology of neurological and autoimmune diseases.
- Be able to describe the mechanisms of neuronal degeneration in Parkinson's disease and prion diseases.
- Be able to explain the role of neurons and glial cells in the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases.
- Demonstrates a deep understanding of the range of methods used in experimental neuroscience and their limitations.
- Can describe the key stages of a neurobiological experiment.
- The ability to describe and critically evaluate the methodological component of a neurobiological research article.
