Abstract
The grammar component of the course is the natural continuation of the grammar component of the course of Practical English. Its goal, however, is not merely to lay down the rules, but rather to describe the architecture of the English language. On the one hand, the student is expected to have mastered the practical grammar of English at approximately the C1/C2 level, on the other hand, the student need have no fear if something has been forgotten - the gaps, should they be discovered, shall be filled.
The stylistics component of the course focuses on the system of expressive resources and stylistic devices of the English language in line with the effects achieved. Students will develop their skills of stylistic analysis viewing the text as a unity of semantic, functional, structural, and stylistic elements.
Within the format of the course, students learn to analyse and create texts belonging to different functional styles. Seminars offer a variety of practical exercises and creative work. The course contains novel elements - juxtaposition of style and discourse analyses; elements of narratological analysis of emotive prose; the use of generative models (AI) for stylistic and sentiment analysis.
Learning Objectives
- Develop students’ skills in stylistic analysis.
- Explore how style functions in different communicative contexts and how stylistic expressive means contribute to meaning, persuasion, and reader response.
- Enable students to apply stylistic analysis to both critiquing existing texts - including those created by AI - and producing original written work with greater stylistic awareness and sophistication.
- Enable students to understand the architecture of the English language.
- Enable students to understand which structures are allowed and which are not, and how the structure used determines the register of speech.

Assessment Elements
- Examination StylisticsStudents provide stylistic analysis of a given excerpt at all the language levels.
- Module 1 grammar testThe test will only cover the material which will have been discussed by that time. Each element within the task is assessed on the 0-2 scale: incorrect – partially correct – correct. If you were absent on the day that the test was set, you may not sit it again, irrespective of the reason.
- Performance during grammar classes in Module 2Each seminar is evaluated at 2 points max. The final mark for classwork is rendered into a 10-point system.
- Module 2 grammar testThe test will only cover the material which will have been discussed by that time. Each element within the task is assessed on the 0-2 scale: incorrect – partially correct – correct.
