Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the political, economic, and regulatory environment of African markets, with a special focus on business strategies and government relations (GR).
Students will explore the institutional landscape of African countries, the role of the state in economic development, and the key regulatory frameworks affecting business operations. Particular attention will be given to the challenges of transparency, political and economic uncertainty, and the influence of informal institutions and traditional governance systems on business activities.
Learning Objectives
- The objective of the course is to provide students with foundational knowledge and practical skills required for expert and analytical support of business activities in African countries, with particular emphasis on institutional analysis, government relations, and professional communication with African partners and public authorities.

Course Contents
- Theme 1. The current situation in African countries. Specifics of interaction with African counterparts. Preparation for negotiations and information analysis.
- Theme 2. Russia–Africa relations. Russian business and public authorities in Africa.
- Theme 3. Formal and informal institutions in Africa: patterns and specifics of interaction.
- Theme 4. Engagement with regulators, local authorities and other official institutions in African countries in the interest of business.
- Theme 5. Methodology for preparing analytical, marketing and reporting materials.
