Abstract

This program’s general aim is to provide students with a background about the main aspects and directions of foreign policy of Vietnam. The program focuses on the evolution of foreign policy of Vietnam, historical origins of relations with other countries, main stages of establishing diplomatic relations. Students will also know about Vietnam’s modern foreign policy and the most acute problems in relations with neighbors in the region.

Learning Objectives

Demonstrate knowledge of the laws of development of Vietnam’s foreign policy
Apply knowledge about the history of the development of international relations of Vietnam in personal research projects.
Demonstrate knowledge of the influence of domestic and foreign policy factors in establishing relations with foreign states by Vietnam
Able to use professional political vocabulary for the explanation of the problems of foreign policy and international relations of Vietnam.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Student will be able to apply and to analyze the knowledge about early foreign policy of Vietnam in written forms and other practical forms.
Student will be able to critically investigate real foreign policy practices of Vietnam and will be able to analyze key areas of modern Vietnamese foreign policy.
Student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of relevant research principles and methods of studying the origins of foreign relations of Vietnam.
Student will be able to exercise the knowledge gained in order to identify internal causes for the restoration of diplomatic relations with Western countries in a written form.
Student will be able to use information literacy skills to identify key domestic events for analyzing changes in Vietnam's foreign policy.

Course Contents

Foreign policy of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam after the independence (1954-1964).
Vietnam's foreign policy in 1964-1975.
Vietnam-Soviet-Chinese relations.
Vietnam and ASEAN.
Vietnamese-American and Vietnamese-European relations.

Assessment Elements

Test
The test will be provided in the end of the 1st module in offline format during the session. The test is not blocking. It will be evaluated based on the students’ ability to accurately understand the approaches of the East Asian countries, taking into account a comprehensive grasp of the course material covered thus far. Answers should be clear, concise, and precise, effectively communicating your understanding of the regional features.
ATTENDANCE
The grade will be based on attendance during the lectures/seminars. Attendance in class is basic and mandatory.
Participation
All students should actively participate in discussions. Students should be prepared for classes and be ready to provide information/feedback or answer the questions on the subject. Participation grades are based on the amount and quality of participation. This means that a student needs to add new facts, data and opinions to participate in the discussion. In order to get full marks for the participation students need to actively participate in the class discussions, to demonstrate familiarity with assigned readings and lecture material, including being prepared to answer the questions that the instructor may pose.
