Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course "History of International Relations" based on a systemic approach provides a comprehensive understanding of the history of Russia's foreign policy in the modern and contemporary periods. The main focus is on understanding the logic and patterns of the processes of development of Russia's foreign policy in the context of the evolution of the global system of international relations. The course is interdisciplinary, drawing upon the significant role of political science, sociology, and systems analysis in modern understandings of the history of international relations. The course integrates methods and concepts from political science, sociology, and systems analysis to develop a comprehensive understanding of the factors and patterns, specifics, and mechanisms of functioning of Russian and Soviet diplomacy, and to form the ability to use forecasting methods to predict the possible development of Russia's foreign policy in the short and medium-term perspectives.

  • To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the history of international relations in the modern and contemporary periods, its main stages and patterns, the specifics and mechanisms of functioning of different systems of international relations that existed from the late 19th to the early 21st century, the dominant foreign policy concepts in various epochs, the interconnection between international political and economic relations, and the most common approaches in political science for studying the history of international relations.
  • To develop their ability to use the fundamental categories and concepts related to the theory and practice of international relations, and methods of forecasting their possible development in the short and medium-term perspectives.

    The evaluation will be based on three assessment periods (slices): 1/3 * A1 + 1/3 * A2 + 1/3 * A3, with each of the intermediate assessments requiring at least 4 points. 1. The first control slice (A1) evaluates knowledge on the section "History of International Relations (before 1945)." 2. The second control slice (A2) evaluates knowledge on the section "History of International Relations (1945-1991)." 3. The third control slice (A3) evaluates knowledge on the section "History of International Relations (1991-2020)."

    The exam will be graded on a 10-point scale.
  • non-blocking Research Paper
    Grades for all forms of ongoing assessment are given on a 10-point scale.
