Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course will examine the development of Russia’s relations with Southeast Asian countries over the past two decades. We will discuss political and economic spheres of cooperation and pay a special attention to the ASEAN, US influence in the region and other issues in bilateral relations.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of foreign policy of the Russian Federation
- Apply balanced theoretical and practical perspectives in engaging with issues and problems in Southeast Asia region
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Student will be able to give a comprehensive overview of the Russia-Indonesia economic and political relations
- Student will be able to give a comprehensive overview of the Russia-Malaysia economic and political relations
- Student will be able to give a comprehensive overview of the Russia-Myanmar economic and political relations
- Student will be able to give a comprehensive overview of the Russia-Philippines economic and political relations
- Student will be able to give a comprehensive overview of the Russia-Thailand economic and political relations
- Student will be able to give a comprehensive overview of the Russia-Vietnam economic and political relations
- to explain what connects Russia with the countries of Southeast Asia/ASEAN, and what role Russia plays in the Asia-Pacific region;
- to assess the importance of the ASEAN-centric multilateral institutions formed over the years in the Asia-Pacific regional context, as well as to highlight the main features of these institutions;
- to compare the Southeast Asian state and social systems with the Russian political and social structure, to analyze the reasons for the obvious significant differences, both in the way of economic thinking and in approaches to solving economic issues in Russia and the countries of Southeast Asia;
- to describe the current state and prospects for the development of Russia’s relationships with the countries of Southeast Asia/ASEAN, as well as to provide examples of economic cooperation between Russia and its Southeast Asian partners;
- to reveal the historic meaning of Russia’s participation, along with the countries of Southeast Asia/ASEAN, in the larger Asia-Pacific set of multilateral institutions, and, most recently, in BRICS:
- to develop and formulate approaches to solving the most important international problems of the region.
