Course Syllabus
Abstract
The course is aimed at developing the competencies of students for successful interaction both in an intercultural context and within their own culture, and consists of a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part introduces students to the most influential concepts in the field of intercultural communication as a science from the moment of its inception to the present, both those that arose abroad (Edward Hall, Geert Hofstede, Richard Lewis) and in our country (S.G. Ter-Minasova , Y. Stepanov, Z. I. Kirnoze, V. G. Zinchenko and others).The practical part of the course involves working with English-language texts in order to develop skills in tracking key features of national worldviews and presenting the results in individual and group projects; discussions based on the material read; solving cases on intercultural communication. The uniqueness of the course lies in the fact that it is based on a combination of traditional and innovative approaches to intercultural problems with the involvement of developments carried out within the framework of the Nizhny Novgorod School of Intercultural Communication, which has existed since 2000.

Expected Learning Outcomes
- Uses various definitions of intercultural communication
- Gives definitions to "culture" in history, psychology, linguistics, etc.
- Differentiates classifications of cultures by various scholars
- Compares definitions of concepts in different cultures given by scholars.
- Differentiates types of non-verbal communication (kinesics, proxemics, etc.)
- Gives definitions of culture shock and stereotype, differentiates stages of culture shock
- Differentiates national concepts of different cultures, explains the origins of national concepts
