Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is dedicated to advanced research methods in developmental science. Cutting-edge technologies have given a rise to the development of non-invasive neuroimaging techniques that improve understanding the processes and mechanisms of developmental change from infancy through adolescence. This course covers properties, considerations and practical applications of neuroimaging methods in studies with children. This course provides both theoretical knowledge about neuroimaging techniques and practical experience in data analyses of neuroimaging data. In the theoretical part of the course students will learn about experimental design and general physical principles of methods including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and magnetoencephalography (MEG). During the practical sessions, the course will focus on MRI data analysis and go through the details of MRI data acquisition, pre-processing and step by step implementation of most advanced data analysis pipeline, which takes into account considerations associated with pediatric samples. The final point to highlight is the growth of the number of publications with studies which use advanced neuroimaging methods in combination with developmental and educational sciences. Considering this fact, the course is recommended not only for students who plan to use neuroimaging techniques, but for those who want to be able to understand and interpret neuroimaging results presented in the literature.
